QUALIFICATION OVERVIEW
The Bachelor of Nursing aims to equip you with the necessary knowledge base, practical skills and attitudes to work safely, effectively and productively with clients within a healthcare setting. With over 1,300 hours of clinical placement, you will learn the value of optimising the physical, mental and social wellbeing of people and their communities, promoting balanced lifestyles and supporting people to realise their full potential. On successful completion of the WITT Bachelor of Nursing Degree, students are supported through the process of registration with the Nursing Council of New Zealand.
APPROX TIMETABLE FOR THE BACHELOR OF NURSING. BELOW IS AN EXPLANATION OF HOURS:
The BN programme is full time and there are 36-40 hours of study allocated per week.
Mondays are nearly always a full day in a classroom environment, at 8.30am-4.30pm.
Tuesdays are nearly always a simulation, online group and individual learning environment day. You will be placed in a learning group and scheduled once all enrolments are completed to even out the learning groups. The whole day should be blocked for learning. This educational choice is explained at the pre-Hui event in February - at how the groups are created. You should be prepared to start at 8.30am if placed in that group on a Tuesday and be prepared to be part of a later group finishing at 5.30pm.
Wednesday and/or Thursday clinical groups of learners either:
- after the orientation week attends for a four-hour Clinical day at the Hospital starting at 8am finishing at 12, followed by tutorials and or class learning until 4 pm.
- the other half of the group on the day not scheduled for clinical practice have self-directed and team time to complete assessment learning and tasks.
- the clinical groups are again decided once all enrolments for the programme are completed
Friday is a full day in-classroom environment at 8.30am-4.30pm.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
The following criteria provide entry into the Bachelor of Nursing programme:
- University Entrance, including 14 credits at Level 3 in an NZQA approved science subject; or
- New Zealand Certificate in Study and Career Preparation (Level 4) WITT Health Pathway, or equivalent; or
- NZQA approved undergraduate degree.
Prospective students should make their applications early to :
- Secure a place on the programme
- Determine staircasing arrangements for entry into the programme
All applicants interested in nursing should apply for entry into the Bachelor of Nursing in the first instance. The WITT School of Nursing will contact you to confirm you meet the academic entry criteria for the Bachelor of Nursing or to assist you in designing your study pathway into the Bachelor of Nursing.
Due to the time involved in processing background checks, references and police checks we strongly encourage you to submit your application 4 weeks before the start of the course.
SPECIAL ADMISSION CRITERIA
Applicants must meet entry criteria as approved by WITT's Academic Board. As students will be undertaking practice in a variety of clinical placements, admission is subject to consideration of:
- Criminal, Disciplinary and Health Declaration form
- References
- Curriculum vitae (no more than two A4 pages)
- 'Readiness to Study Nursing’ Self-disclosure form
- First Aid Declaration (First Aid Certificate, no older than 9 months from the beginning of the Bachelor of Nursing programme)
- Immunisation declaration
- Travel declaration
English language requirements
If English is not your first language you are also required to provide evidence of your English language skills as listed below.
- IELTS 6.5 (academic) overall and in every band or equivalent
